Professional Learning and Development for Science Education

My role as a science facilitator is to support schools in teaching science. With the new PLD approach from the Ministry of Education, this can be planned in many different ways -with my support the whole way!

The first step is to think about what's needed, and again, I can support the school in reviewing student capability in science, thinking about key ideas that the PLD needs to address and then mapping this out over a period of time.

The school then needs to formally apply for the PLD which is written up in a PLD Journal with facilitator support as required. Once this has been accepted we write up a Delivery Plan and send that through to the Ministry.

What excites me about this style of PLD is that the sky's the limit! You may want to choose a smaller group of teachers to work with me, or teachers across local schools in a PLG format, or all the teachers in one school. You may choose one or two terms to have an intensive focus on science and then repeat this the year after. And the Institute of Professional Learning Te Whai Toi Tangata team, we can bring in literacy or maths or assessment facilitators to support this as well.
